What is it
A video sales letter: a scripted, talk-to-camera or voiceover video that walks the viewer through a complete persuasion arc in one sitting, from hook to problem to mechanism to proof to offer to call to action. The full VSL runs anywhere from 3 to 20+ minutes and usually lives on a landing page or as a long-form ad for warm audiences. The Mini VSL compresses the same arc into 60 to 180 seconds for cold traffic in the feed. Both work because a single continuous story carries the viewer past objections that a static ad has no room to address, and because hearing a person explain something builds trust faster than reading claims.
What makes it work
The first 3 seconds decide everything
The hook has to stop the scroll on its own, with or without sound. Open on the most surprising claim, the sharpest pain point or a pattern-interrupt visual, never on a logo or a greeting. In the feed, most viewers decide within the first second or two, so the line has to be on screen as text as well as spoken.
Follow the arc, in order
Hook → problem the viewer recognises → why the usual fixes fail → the new mechanism (the "why this works") → proof → the offer → risk reversal → call to action. Skipping the mechanism is the most common mistake: without a believable reason why this is different, the proof and offer feel like hype.
Name the villain, not the viewer
Blame the failed alternative, the industry, the outdated method or the hidden cause, never the viewer's own weakness. "It's not your fault, the tools you were given were built wrong" keeps them nodding. Making them feel stupid makes them leave.
Proof arrives early and keeps arriving
Don't save testimonials for the end. Drop a result, a number, a screenshot or a short customer clip every 20 to 40 seconds in a Mini VSL, and after every major claim in a long one. Each piece of proof re-earns attention.
Captions, cuts and on-screen text are not optional
Most feed viewing is silent. Burned-in captions, keyword highlights, B-roll cutaways, simple zooms and pattern changes every few seconds keep the eye engaged. A static talking head with no text loses cold viewers within seconds, however good the script.
